You are a Genius! How to Reach your Genius Zone.
You have a genius.
Each of us has a genius that lives in us. We are all unique and have the potential to bring amazing skill into the world. Understand what your personal genius is to be your best self in business, life and relationships.
We were last discussing the cognitive function stack that every individual has. When you learn what your specific stack is, you can begin to get in your Genius Zone.
Everybody has one specific way of learning and making the best decisions. But they also have one weak way of learning and making decisions as well, usually showing up in times of stress.
When we learn what our genius is, we can begin to grow and excel in that direction. But the opposite is also true.
Antonia and Joel continue their discussion on why some people make bad decisions over and over again.
So personality typing is used not just to define behavior, but how we process information and make decisions.
Antonia: All the different combinations of how people learn and make decisions gives us the 16 different personality types.
There are 16 different types of people that evaluate and learn a certain way. Some make decisions based on how it will affect their outside world. Others make decisions on how it will make them feel internally.
Some people learn best by running simulations in their mind and visualizing images and concepts. Other people learn best by experimenting and engaging the outer world.
My personal opinion is that we have just the right amount of people of each type, to be able to maintain the perfect ecosystem.
What is the difference between a developed and undeveloped decision making?
The core of your personality doesn’t change, but it does grow.
“Growth” doesn’t necessarily mean positive development. If left unchecked, it can begin to manifest in unhealthy ways. A garden grows whether you’re tending it or not. If no directed care is given to the garden or no boundaries created, it’ll just grow however it wants. It can be overwhelming and undesirable when aggressive plants grow deep roots and graft themselves into the garden.
It’s the same with our personalities. If we’re not disciplined and indulge ourselves, truly undesirable traits can become deeply rooted and “grow” into our personalities. It can encourage us to make bad decisions over and over again. When we try to remove these weeds, it can be uncomfortable. We run away from positive growth because we fear we might lose ourselves in the process and it can be uncomfortable.
The best thing about personality psychology are the tools we have access to. If we can distinguish between how our minds are wired, environmental programming from our past, and what’s a virtue or vice, we can use the set of tools to “landscape” our garden to become the kind of person we want to be.
Why is the Co-Pilot vital for growth?
Everybody is most comfortable with their Driver Genius process. It comes most naturally and we use it all the time. The Co-Pilot is not used as often for a couple of reasons.
As an Extrovert, it’s far less easy for me manage my “inner world” than the outer one. My Driver is a learning process and my co-pilot is a decision making one. I naturally use the Exploration genius, but it takes effort to use my decision genius, Accuracy.
So our Co-Pilot process forces us to visit that ‘other’ world. This is good for us, but not always comfortable. Depending on what our driver is, it will force us to be more thoughtful about making decisions or make us slow down to process information.
That’s why sometimes it can be difficult for us to make decisions under pressure if our driver is a learning process.
However, if we indulge ourselves psychologically and emotionally, and don’t get out of our comfort zone, it’ll be difficult to grow. Unhealthy people may not use their Co-Pilot or even their Driver. This is because they are too invested in their 10-year old process or “forced” into their 3 Year Old process.
There is a common misconception of fixing your weaknesses. If you’re a sensory person, you need to work on your intuition, or if you’re a feeler, you need to become a thinker. However, this will only dilute the natural talents of your Driver and Co-Pilot.
When you understand your cognitive function stack, or genius in the “Car Model,” there is a lot of prescription in how to best stay in your “flow” state. Flow is where we get our energy.
My observation has been that the people at the top of their game: athletes, mathematicians, engineers, visionaries, etc, have focused on developing their Co-Pilot process to the point you can’t tell which is their Driver or Co-Pilot.
The stronger your Co-Pilot process, the more balanced you become as a person. As you actively use and develop it, the more you can get in your Zone of Genius.
Joel: So when you take the personality test, it basically tells you how you perceive and see the world and how you learn best. It will tell you your genius and what you’re Driver and Co-Pilot is. What your learning and decision making geniuses are.
Which of those judging or decision making functions do you use to make your best decisions? What type of criteria do you need to focus on to make your best decision?
When you get the 4 Letter code, each letter explains to you which cognitive function you use. It’s a decoder ring to help you understand how you show up to the world. Your primary way of engaging reality. How you best interact and engage with people and things around you.
So you can see how powerful this is in business or in careers. From a career sense, it can help guide you to work in areas you’re naturally talented and strong in.
From an entrepreneurial point, you can build outstanding teams. Helping you to make sure people are in the right positions inside the business. Making sure you’re playing to their strengths. Ensuring they focus on how they learn and make decisions best for themselves and the company.
And if you take it one level further, you can apply this to customers and your clients. It can help you understand the type of customers you’re talking to. How do our target customers see the world? How do they make decisions? How do the people that are interested in our business best learn? How can we give them information in a way that makes sense to them? This is extremely powerful in building rapid customer rapport.
This is a really powerful place to be in for any business. It gives you 3 different levels, one for yourself, your team, and your customers and clientele. It’s extremely powerful in the framework of your business or career.
